Problem starting xPLRFX service

This is the place to ask questions about using xPL - whether that's installing the software or getting your hardware working.

Problem starting xPLRFX service

Postby 40cuYardDiver » Tue Feb 23, 2010 5:21 pm

Hi,

I have a Windows 2000 SP4 system and decided to update the xPLRFX software
to the latest version(from v2.4.0 to v4.5.0). I cannot restart the xPLRFX service.
In the Application event log I have the following two entries:

Failed to open registry key. SOFTWARE\xPL\Mal\rfxcom. Error code 0x00000005

Unable to load security codes. Please reinstall xPLRFX.

I've also checked the following from a previous post.

Two things to check -

1) In the registry, there should be an entry under
HKLM/Software/xPL/Mal/rfxcom/XMLPath
that points to your installation folder.

2) In that folder, there should be a file called security.xml

Everything seems to be OK. I have tried repeated removing and reinstalling with reboots. No luck. Thanks in advance for any help.

Error code 0x00000005 is "Access Denied" which suggests some kind of security setting or policy that is preventing the service from accessing the registry.

Hi,

Thanks for your suggestion regarding the 0x00000005 status code. I have spent
some time using regedt32 examining the permissions assigned to the
Mal\rfxcom registry key. Everything appears identical to those assigned
in a Windows Xp install. Even deleted the key and manually reinstalled - same
error.

I have installed the latest version of xPLRFX on two other systems (Windows 2000
Professional SP4 and Windows 2000 Server SP4). Identical failure messages resulted. No problem installing under Windows XP.

I tried running Sysinternals Process Monitor while starting the xPLRFX service.
It shows that on the RegOpenKey of HKLM\SOFTWARE\xPL\Mal\rfxcom - "ACCESS
DENIED Desired Access: Read, WOW64_32Key"

According to "msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa384129(VS.85).aspx" under
Windows 2000 the KEY_WOW64_32KEY is not supported and will result in failure.

Are you using this key? Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide.

Sorry for the delay in replying - I must have missed this message when you posted it.

It looks like I may have got something wrong when working around Microsoft's knuckle-headed registry hack for 32 bit apps on 64-bit versions of Vista.

I'll investigate as soon as I have time (probably this weekend)
