Cannot shutdown with RFXCom transmitter attached
Hi all.
I've got a strange situation where if it try to shutdown/restart/hibernate etc Windows will freeze on the "Windows is shutting down..." or "Preparing to hibernate.." screens and i have to physically hold down the power button to force a shutdown.
If i unplug the RFXCom unit then i can shutdown fine.
I'm running the latest hal and rfxcom software (downloaded from this site yesterday).
I had a similar sympton on another computer also, but i never really investigated much as it was pretty much on 24/7.
I've uploaded my xpl hal log file, is there anything else that might be of use to help anyone that would be kind enough to help me?
In event viewer there are a number of xpl related errors. They are:
Source: xplRFX
RFXCOM Transmitter: Cannot open serial port \\.\COM3. Error code 2
Failed to load USB Module definitions. Tha application should be reinstalled
Source: xPLHub
Failed to open registry key: SOFTWARE\xPL, Error code 0x00000002
Everything appears to be working fine however. I remotely turn on/off things using EventGhost.
I'm running XP SP3 on both machines that have the problem.
Thanks for reading!

Re: Cannot shutdown with RFXCom transmitter attached
typical, as soon as I post i make another discovery!
If i safely remove the USB serial converter (rfxcom) before shutting down it works fine.
That to me suggests its more a bug in the drivers i downloaded from http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm
Would someone more knowledgable confirm?
I'd still like to know what those event view errors are about though, and whether i need to fix them.

Failed to open registry key: SOFTWARE\xPL, Error code 0x00000002 means "File not found", which indicates that the xPL registry keys are not set up. If you had an old version of xPLRFX I suggest doing an uninstall from the Control Panel and then install the new version again.
Failing to load the module definitions is a consequence of not being able to get the path to the XML file from the registry.

Re: Cannot shutdown with RFXCom transmitter attached
cheers for the reply, sorry i didn't answer sooner.
I never had an older version of xplrfx installed. I downloaded xplrfx (from xpl monkey, is there another one?) and the new xpl hal server 2 with included hub on the day i installed a fresh copy of xp.
Its still giving me jip this. Depending on the driver i use for my rfxcom i can either go into standby or come out of standby, but not both.

Do the xPL registry keys exist on your system? They are all under HKLM/Software/xPL

After reading another post in this forum, could you look in the Windows application event log and let me know if there are any xPL registry related errors there?
Thanks

Re: Cannot shutdown with RFXCom transmitter attached
Yep, got keys in the registry:
Hope that makes sense!
I wouldn't worry about this too much, everything is actually working. The only reason i noticed the event logs are because of this standby/resume problem and that is definitely the FTDI driver for the rfxcom as i've tried different versions of it and get different results.
I'm thinking of dragging this computer into the present and trying Win7 to get standby working.
Thanks Mal.

Re: Cannot shutdown with RFXCom transmitter attached
ARGH!
I installed Windows 7 hoping that my standby/hibernate/resume issues might be fixed but its worse.
Now i get a driver_power_state_failure blue screen of death about 10mins after the PC resumes.
It doesn't happen with the rfxcom disconnected so its definitely that causing it.
Starting from cold or restarting works fine, but i need standby/hibernate.
I'm using the latest xpl hal, latest rfxcom software and the latest FTDI driver (2.6).
Does anyone else have an rfxcom transmitter connected by usb that is able to successfully use standy/hibernate?
I'm on the verge of giving up now
Cheers.

Re: Cannot shutdown with RFXCom transmitter attached
Sam,
Try a restart with all xpl disabled.
Then connect the RFXCOM connected in RFXmitter and go to standby and resume.
Contact FTDI if the FTDI driver is the source of the problem.

Re: Cannot shutdown with RFXCom transmitter attached
Thanks Bert.
I've already done that. No xpl running/attached gives me a stable system.
Attach rfxcom, go into standby -> resume -> wait 10mins = BSOD.
I emailed FTDI a week or 2 ago about their driver after emailing the rfxcom support email address. They said they were unaware of any issues with the current driver.
Very frustrating!
